Perhaps not too surprisingly given the involvement of
scriptwriter Julian Fellows, quite a number of Mary Poppins cast members took
part in BBC1s Party At The Palace special, filmed at ![]()
Only a week after going into the show, it lead to a radio
interview for Louise Gold, when she
appeared, on Sunday 16 April 2006, on Theatre
Radios Tim McArthur Interviews.
Louise Gold also spoke
about her work on this show when she guested on the cabaret Dead By 12 (one Thursday night right after a
performance of the show)
There was no performance of the show on Monday 6
November 2006, because they needed to use the theatre and most of the cast to
re-tech the big Act 1 ballet Jolly Holiday.
After the show on Monday 1 October 2007, most of the
company appeared in a late night FUNdraising cabaret at The Trafalgar Studios, Theatre
Cares Present: The Company Of Mary Poppins.
It is quite like (if she wasnt on holiday at the
time) that one of Louise Golds
performances in Mary Poppins took place 33 and 34 years to the day of her
professional stage debut in Dick Whittington.
This show is Louise
Golds third at The Prince Edward
Theatre, six years ago she played the major supporting role of Tanya in Mamma Mia, and, some sixteen years ago she herself
starred as Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes (stage
show). On the latter Simon Wood
had been an assistant stage manager.
It is perhaps worth noting that Mary Poppinss film originator
Julie Andrews, this stage shows leading lady Scarlett Strallen, and as a matter of fact Louise Gold all trained, many years apart at the same stage school,
Arts Educational
(although in Julie Andrewss day it
was known as the Cone-Ripman School).
In fact Rebecca Thornhill also spent
some time at Arts Educational too.
Louise Gold, has previously
appeared along with both Lee
William-Davis, and, Louise Davidson
at The Prince Edward Theatre in Mamma Mia, for which Andrew Bruce was the sound designer, Howard Harrison the lighting designer. In fact Louise Davidson had been Louise
Golds understudy then as well.
Gavin Lee, Louise Gold, and, Tanya Robb had previously appeared together in Du Barry Was A Lady (2001 Production).
Aden Gilletts television
credits include The House Of Eliott, in
which it may be noted that Sarah Flind
made a brief appearance in an episode of the first series, while Louise Gold notably featured in one
episode of the second series.
Aden Gillett may possibly
have appeared in Kids At Heart, there is an
actor listed there as Aidan Gillet.
Scarlett
Strallen, Louise Gold, Ray C. Davis, Kate Tydman, Rachel
Rawlinson, Georgia Russell, Roxy Searle, James Burgess, Lawrence
Michalowski, and, Ashley Clish
had previously appeared in Chitty Chitty
Bang Bang, with also had songs by Richard
M Sherman, and, Robert B. Sherman,
and; for which Andrew Bruce was the
sound designer, Lucy Baker a Sound
Operator.
Paul Bentley, Michael Cantwell, and Louise Gold had previously appeared
together in Assassins.
Paul Bentley and Louise Gold had previously appeared
together in Kiss Me Kate, and on the radio in Ned Sherrins Review Of Revue.
Louise Gold, Paul Bentley, and, Diane Langton had previously appeared together in Follies.
Paul Bentley had previously
appeared in The Regents Park 70th
Anniversary Gala.
Ray C. Davis, and, Louise Gold had previously appeared
together in Joseph
And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Norwich Production). It is uncertain
whether or not the Maurice Cambridge
listed as a musician in that production is the same person who is the
orchestral manager for this production.
Diane Langton may have
previously appeared in The
Royal Variety Performance 1982, and, Comedy
Tonight. Her recording credits include Cole Porter Night & Day, Defiant Dames, and, The
Great Musicals - Wonderful Tales.
Diane Langton and Louise Gold had previously appeared
together in Chicago & Company.
Amanda Symonds and Louise Gold had previously worked as
voice-artistes on Animal Farm.
The role of Miss Andrew had been originated by Rosemary Ashe, with whom Louise Gold had appeared on stage with
in The Metropolitan Mikado, a Concert of
highlights from the Ratepayers
Iolanthe & Metropolitan Mikado, and, The
Soap Opera.
Paul Christ had previously
appeared on the television programme A
Week In The West End as the Musical Director of Disneys Beauty And The Beast;
Louise Gold featured in the same
series as an actress appearing at The
Prince Edward Theatre in Mamma Mia. Director Richard Eyre, and, Producer Cameron Mackintosh also appeared in the
programme.
Howard Harrison was also the
lighting designer on The Water Babies, for
which Louise Gold was Leading Lady.
It is not clear whether Sound Operator Lucy Baker is the same person as that
of the same name in the With special
thanks to in the credits for the film Muppet
Treasure Island.
While appearing in Mary Poppins, although not
specifically as members of the Mary Poppins cast, Louise Gold, Rebecca Lock, and Eliza
Lumley, along with Cameron
Mackintosh took part in the Side By Side By
Sondheim 30th Anniversary Gala (at one time Gavin Lee and Scarlet
Strallen were also on the bill to appear in this gala, although in the even
they did not).
While appearing in Mary Poppins, although
not specifically as a member of the Mary Poppins cast Rebecca Lock, and for that matter Louise Gold, took part in A Love Letter To Dan.
Louise Gold, and, Louise Davidson had previously appeared
together in Something For The Boys.
Louise Gold, and,
Michael
Cantwells recording credits include Cabaret.
Diane Langtons recording
credits include The Great Musicals Laughter
And Tears, an album which also includes Stephan Brookers conducting.
Since leaving the cast of Mary Poppins, Rebecca Lock has embarked on learning
the craft of hand-and-rod puppetry to go on to replace Julie Atherton in Avenue Q.
According to the theatre programme
for Next Doors Baby an
actress named Clare Louise Connolly
who went on to appear in that show, was among the final cast of this one, but
so far your webmaster has not found the actress mentioned on any theatre
programme for the show, or the shows website.
Critics Comments
Mr
Banks' nanny-of-old, Miss Andrews, deserves a mention. Louise Gold was a bit of
a scene stealer in her minor role as the very scary nanny whose method for
curbing children's naughty behaviour was using liberal doses of brimstone and
treacle. Debra Aspinall, LIMITED EDITION, 1 August 2007
Louise Gold as Miss Andrew (the Nanny from
hell) is deliciously evil. By the way,
Miss Andrew makes Madame Morrible look like Mary Poppins! Craig Brockman, My
Louise Gold (Ms Andrew) - TOTALLY COMPLETELY
stole the show. She was the next best thing in the show after Gavin! She was VERY
different to Rosie's Ms Andrew. She's more fierce, her voice is more deep and
manly! Her belts are scarily amazing and her 'Brimstone & Treacle' is just
pure amazing! [10/10] Felix Chan, DRESS CIRCLE MESSAGEBOARD, 24 September
2006.
Louise
Gold was the brilliantly wicked Nanny Andrews. What a shame this character was
missed out in the film as she booms her commands out to the terrified children,
but eventually comes to a very satisfying end. Heather Flood, THIS IS LOCAL
His own
nanny, played with Margaret Thatcher-style fury by Louise Gold, shows just why
the head of the household is so messed up. Reg Little, THE OXFORD TIMES, 29 August 2007
In my
opinion, Scarlett stole the show without a shadow of a doubt, although she did
have a very strong cast to support her, including the brilliant Louise Gold as
the evil nanny, Miss Andrew, and the wonderful Banks' children (here played by
Beans Balawi and Jenny Huxley-Golden) amongst many others. Jenny, Scarlet Strallen Fansite
(http://www.freewebs.com/scarlettstrallen/showreviews.htm), 13 July 2006
Louise Gold
as Miss Andrews was a highlight I was so worried before as I had adored
Rosemary Ashe so much, but Louise was not inferior in any way. While Rosemary
did Miss Andrews more in an opera style, Louises Miss Andrews is more loud and
bossy with a very deep voice.
