Review
by Emma Shane, 18
September 2007
This
is a rather little known Muppet Show 45 single, indeed until
recently I didn’t know of its existence. Judging by the record itself, it seems
to have been produced to promote the album The Muppet Show Two, although it is
a proper single in its own right (it is not sold as a promo or such like). As
for the songs, well the A side For What It’s Worth has an
uncredited Jerry Nelson heading the
company with one of the most moving anthems against hunting there is. He sings
the number with beautiful simplicity and warmth. The B side Pig
Calpyso stars Frank Oz and Jim Henson, who actually are credited,
in one of their characteristic double acts as Piggy and Kermit. It also
features some classic Muppet backing vocals from a number of uncredited
legendary Muppet Show puppeteers, including the distinctive Louise Gold being her best known
character, Annie Sue Pig. The recordings on this record seems to sound as good
as the LP from which it comes, and the later CD reissue of the songs. For
completeist Muppet memorabilia collectors it would be a nice addition to a
collection, but for anyone else there is not a lot to be gained by acquiring
this record, the tracks have turned up on a couple of other albums including on
CD. A nice little record, but apart from being little known, not really
anything special.
